"There is no such thing on earth as an uninteresting subject; the only thing that can exist is an uninterested person."

My Musical History

For what it's worth

I started playing the piano when I was in 3rd grade and continued with lessons through high school.  In fourth grade I picked up the saxophone which, to my retrospective dismay, resulted in a year of high school marching band.  We were bad.  And not in the good way.  I made up for my shame by joining ROTC.  When I was 16 I started learning guitar and discovered that stringed instruments come very easily to me.  Since then I've dabbled with the mandolin and a little on banjo.  When I was 18 I started singing.  After a year of voice lessons and 3 years of practice I finally began to sound decent.  I always longed to be a tenor...like most radio voices I heard.  I should have known I was in trouble when I was 12 singing the bass line.  I later got involved in a cappella music and learned the subtle pleasure in shaking the windows and walls by belting a B or A note 2 or 3 octaves below middle C through a sub-woofer.  Ahhh.   Along the way I got involved in studio recording with one of my best friends, Rob.  While recording I've picked up a few instruments as I've needed them...bass, tin whistle...empty cases and glasses (don't ask).

On this page I'm posting some of the stuff I've recorded.  For you fellow geeks out there I've included the equipment and how they were recorded.  Enjoy!

Song Notes:

This is a standard Bluegrass/Celtic tune that I recorded in the spare bedroom of my old condo sometime in 1998 or 99.  I mixed it through headphones (a big no-no).  It came out okay considering I was using a cheap sound card.  I played all the instruments...go me.

Another standard Bluegrass/Celtic tune that I recorded in the spare bedroom of my old condo sometime in 1998 or 99. Again with the cheap sound card and headphone mixing.  And, again with me on everything.

Song Notes:

I had a mandolin riff going through my head for a long time.  I finally decided to record it one night.  I remember having a lot of fun doing this one.  This features my debut on the tin whistle.   I put it on a tape and played it in the car for my wife.  She thought it was the radio.  She said something to the effect of "YOU did that?  That's good"  heheh.

MORE TO COME!!!
