About Comic Books
- Get Your Comics Gold -
We've had two comics break the million dollar mark this past month, and it would seem a good time to look at investing in comics. Commodities are hot right now, as they are a sure thing that one can hold onto, appreciate, and watch rise in price. These collectibles are great investments in that we can own a piece of history, hold a piece of the character we love and hold dear, and watch our investment grow.
With that being said, be careful. Don't rush out there and buy up "old" comics just because they might be worth something. Do your homework. Check sites like eBay, Heritage Auctions, and Comic Seeker to get a good idea what they are going for now. If you want to take a risk, buy a comic that is not CGC graded as they normally sell for less, then get it CGC graded. The big thing to be careful about is fad comics or comics that spike in price for one reason or another.
Take Captain America #25 for instance, this comic was selling for hundreds of dollars when it first hit. Mainstream media picked it up on a feeding frenzy was birthed. You can now get the same comic for a couple of bucks on eBay and I've seen a 9.8 graded copy go for $40. Keep in mind it costs at least $17 to get it graded, not including shipping.
There are many ways to make your money grow, but the cool thing about comic books is the connection we have with the product. This can be a danger though, so keep a level head when seeking comics to invest in.

Well the news broke recently about another record breaking comic book, this time from Heritage Auctions, who sold the comic for the $1,075,500 (which includes the buyers premium). Seems we have a bit of the dueling million dollar comics! Lon Allen, Director of the Comics Department said, "...we suspected it could go as high as $800,000. The fact that it then topped seven figures, and nosed out Superman for the world record price was simply amazing to us all. I've never been in an auction room with such excitement." Would've been great to be in that room.
It must feel good for DC Comics who has these two fine heroes in their main lineup. Things have been turning rosy for DC lately. The formation of DC Entertainment, spectacular relaunch of the Batman movies, lots of buzz about their current titles, and breaking new ground in comics with their weekly series and newspaper format Wednesday Comics. I bet their loving this.

I had a very weird dream the other night. It was a very action packed, where I was in this old house that was besieged by these mutated monstrous beings. It wasn't exactly explained in the dream but I was also apparently affected by this mutation and had great strength, which I used to lay the smack down upon these evil beings and cleanse my home from their infestation. Then things turned weird and I was back at my parents house in southern Oregon with my wife and child and was attacked by another monstrous creature. This time it was non other than The Incredible Hulk. Not necessarily the one from the comics, but the bona fide Lou Ferrigno decked out in green paint and back in his heyday times of being completely muscled out. I hit him in the face with a rake and he was not pleased with that. I don't remember anything after that because I was awoken by my alarm clock.
Comics have a funny way of seeping into our consciousness. Some of us live, breath, and sleep comic books, and that isn't a bad thing. This passion gets us through hard times, takes us to new worlds, and allows for us to share the experience with others. Some may take it a stretch too far, but being a fan is a great thing, even when it attacks us in our sleep. Just make sure you have a rake....they hate a rake to the face.

It's been no secret that the Comic Con International is out of space. Complaints of huge lines, no rooms, and crowded halls come out every year the convention happens. CCI has pushed the convention center in San Diego to build or they will be moving and since their contract runs up in 2012. The city and neighboring businesses have been making their pitch to CCI to stay, but other cities have been jumping in on what can only be described as a battle royale to secure the convention for their hometown. I've read that the neighboring hotels have offered CCI free floor space in the number of 300,000 square feet and have promised to hold more rooms in an effort to keep them in town.
It will surely be a win for whichever city gets the convention. Guests, fans, industry people, and more flock to the area and bring in millions of dollars in revenue. Many turn it into a vacation and stay longer than the three-day event and that brings even more in. I think the real winners will be the fans that get to have a better show with more room that can hopefully avoid situations like the Twilight fans "ruining" Comic-Con, which happened last year. CCI has made no firm decision yet and it looks like they are waiting it out to see who bids the most in this auction style process. What's your vote? Should Comic-Con stay or go?

Ever dreamed of having a million dollars? What would you do with it? How about buy one comic book, thats right, one single comic book. Well that is what a recent investor did to acquire one of the only highest known graded Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman. The group that brokered the deal is Comicconnect.com a comic book consignment and auction site. They broke the record for the price of a single comic book which they also set with another copy of Action Comics #1 at $317,200.
So why such a high price for a comic book? Well according to the Comic Connect site, this comic is, "Only about 100 copies Action Comics #1 remain in existence, and of those 100, only two have received a grading of 8.0 (Very Fine) or higher. This particular book is one of them, making it among the rarest of the rare."
There is also the fact that commodities (goods like gold, oil, and even comics) are going up in value as the stock market has fluctuated. When stock prices fall, goods often go up in price. I'm no market expert, but we've all seen the price of gas go up and my brother who is in the jewelry business says gold is at its highest its ever been.
Even if I had a million, I don't know if I'd be buying a copy of Action Comics #1. Maybe if I had many many millions, but even then I imagine it would be a hard sell for the wife. Investing in comics can be a difficult thing, especially for the comic fan. The problem for us is that we have an invested interest in the characters we are collecting. I know for me I have many Holy Grails for comics I'd love to own. Avengers #4, Captain America #100, and Captain America Comics #1 are among those for sure. If I had the money, I know I'd pay more than they are worth to acquire those comics for my collection. Thats the trouble with collectors and their collectibles. If one is not careful, a collector can get into a bit of trouble by paying too much for a comic. But I guess when it comes down to it, does it really matter? Have you ever paid more for a comic simply because you needed it for your collection or just had to have it?

How we got started, what hooked us, who was involved, etc. The great thing about comic book collections is that no two are the same. They are almost like a fingerprint in that they are a unique piece, each with identifiers that give a window into our souls. Are they filled with dark and gritty works, trailblazing independent work, mainstream goodness, or just plain comics for kids? Share your story about how you got started collecting in this collection of stories from other comic book collectors. I've started things off with my own story.

Well the announcement came in this week about the new leadership for DC Comics, one of The Big Two in the comic world. With the departure of Paul Levitz as President and Publisher back in September of 2009, there has been speculation as to whom would pick up the slack. These people would be directing the course of the newly formed DC Entertainment, commissioned to not only run DC Comics, but also to bring DC properties to more avenues and media forms, much in the way Marvel has done.
The results have Dan Didio and Jim Lee working as Co-Publishers, and Geoff Johns as Chief Creative Officer. Didio was a fair shoe in as even though some might disagree with his decisions, he has helped shape DC and reclaim some of the ground they lost to Marvel in recent years. Lee was surprising, but totally makes sense given his pioneering work with Image and Wildstorm, and the recent creative directorial role he took with the DC Online game. Johns is perhaps the most surprising, but with is creative work in film, television, and as the chief writer for DC Online, it makes a lot of sense.
I think in the long run, Johns will have the most to prove and it will be interesting to see what he creatively officiates. It will also be interesting to see where DC Entertainment goes, but if this latest rash of DC movies and DVD's are an indication of where things are going, I am very much in favor of DC Entertainment spreading the DC love to as many areas as possible.
New DC Leadership Announced originally appeared on About.com Comic Books on Saturday, February 20th, 2010 at 00:27:47. Permalink | Comment | Email this - Kick-Ass - The New Comic/Movie Model? -
We've all seen how fast the comic series Kick-Ass by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr has been fast-tracked to be made into a movie. Heck, there was the announcement of the film after the first issue or two and there were even trailers of the movie before the series even ended. I kinda think that the late release of the final issues was to give the film producers time to get the movie done and make an easy segue-way from comic to film.
I wonder if this is going to become more and more the model for comics to films. It is almost as if the Kick-Ass movie is the graphic novel for the comic series. Funny to think that the movie almost beat out the actual graphic novel release. The comic is serving to add hype to the movie to add more hype to the comic and subsequent releases.
It's known that some comics are made to be a pitch to movie studios and as Hollywood continues to see gold in the mine of comics it will only continue to be a quick pace to the film studio. I see this as a good thing for fans of the series but I wonder if it will also become a sort of false litmus test. Meaning, that if a series isn't made into a film it isn't good or successful. That, I don't think, will be a good thing in the long run.
Kick-Ass - The New Comic/Movie Model? originally appeared on About.com Comic Books on Monday, February 15th, 2010 at 12:32:02. Permalink | Comment | Email this - Marvel's Bright New World -
It would seem, if the press releases are right, that Marvel Comics is in the middle of a slight paradigm shift. For quite some time, the thrust of Marvel has been to bring a bit of our reality into the Marvel Universe. The Superhero Registration Act was influenced by the headlines of the day, Marvel heroes were forced underground and Civil War was upon them. Next came the Skrull invasion, and then the Dark Reign of Norman Osborne. Lateley, Marvel has been putting out a set of one shot images showcasing the soon to be released Avengers and Secret Avengers titles.
These are all part of an upcoming Heroic Age storyline set to kick off this April. I for one welcome the change. I do like gritty and real world comics, but I also love those comics that take me away from reality. Marvel comics were always those that had characters that had real world flaws, but the storylines were usually kept separate from the headlines of the times. Marvel's past three crossover events have been interesting reads and I've enjoyed them overall, but I am really excited to see them return to something that isn't ripped from today's headlines. It will be neat to see it play out.

I was perusing some of the other comic book sites recently and one thing I noticed over at CBR.com was that one of their listed sponsors was alexrossart.com, which is the site for comic book artist and painter Alex Ross. I spent some time at his site and one of the things that struck me was that he seems to have a very good business sense. Or he has at least hired someone with a very good business sense. His site is very polished, he has a good amount of recent updates, and is using his site as an additional revenue stream.
In that revenue stream, one of the things that caught my eye was the prelim and unused sketches Ross is selling. He has art that wasn't used for projects and first drafts of other sketches that went on to become covers or pages in comics. A very innovative idea in that some would toss out those sketches while here we see one trying to sell it as a one of a kind item.
Comic book creators are very much part small business owner, another part entrepreneur, salesman, PR agent, etc., etc., etc. You got to love what it takes to make it as a successful independent creator. Some excel at certain aspects of the business side of things while others bury their heads in the sand. One would appear to need at least a certain amount of all these things to truly succeed, or at least a whole lot of talent to make up for it.
